Connect with South African families to experience the vibrant culture of the urban townships and the beauties of Cape Town – one of Africa’s loveliest cities. Together, you and a group of South Africans from Mfuleni Township will tour Cape Town’s stunning landscapes and compelling history. As you explore South Africa side-by-side, you’ll learn more about yourself and discover that you and your new South African friends have much in common.
Our host in South Africa is Women for Peace, a local organization helping South African women build better lives for themselves and their children. As a founding member of our Partnership project, Women for Peace has welcomed Global Buddies into its community for many years. Travelers have created a playground, library and computer lab, funded scholarships for South African youth, and renovated a neighborhood childcare center.

ARRIVAL: You will be met at the Cape Town International Airport and transported to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, where Global Buddies staff will greet you and orient you to the area. Opening dinner at the Africa Café. |

PROGRAM BEGINS: An opening ceremony welcomes Global Buddies to Mfuleni Township. Join in a community parade to announce the start of the 2012 Global Buddies program. |

Spend the morning at the Kirstenbosch Gardens – the most beautiful garden in Africa. Walk the trails with your new South African friends and take part in a youth environmental program. After lunch, spend the afternoon visiting a music school and touring the township. |

Visit Philani Nutrition and Development Centre in Khayelitsha Township, to meet local mothers making a difference in their community. Share an early dinner in Franschhoek, a lovely town in the wine country. |

Beach Day! We drive all the way to the Cape of Good Hope, stopping at Boulders Beach to see African penguins, play in the sand and swim in the Indian Ocean. Dinner at a local seaside restaurant. |

It’s Soccer Day! The whole group tours Cape Town’s new Greenpoint Stadium, one of the official FIFA World Soccer tournament sites. After lunch, join in or cheer on a high-spirited soccer game in the township. |

Enjoy a morning of shopping at local craft markets or use the time to rest and relax. After lunch, we have the pleasure of visiting the homes of the Mfuleni Global Buddies. |

Share in the community’s joyful spirit with a visit to a township church and a walking tour of Langa Township. After lunch, board the ferry to tour infamous Robben Island, where Nelson Mandala and other freedom fighters were imprisoned. |

A full day of activities, with a trip to the historic District Six Museum, a cable car ride to the top of world-famous Table Mountain, and a group drum lesson. Then travel to Moyo at Spier for a glorious evening of Pan-African food and entertainment and dancing under an open air Bedouin tent in the Stellenbosch wine country. |

Our program comes to an end in Mfuleni, with a community lunch, youth performance and closing ceremony at Women for Peace. |
